shipyard frawing by s. Johnson

The City of Havre de Grace, MD --hdg seal has leased Andrew Doria - The First Salute land close to the historic Susquehanna Museum at the Lockhouse.

The land is also directly adjacent to the lower reaches of the Susquehanna River.

This Stephen Johnson Drawing depicts how the site will appear when it is prepared for building the Brigantine.

The Lockhouse Museum is in the lower left.

Other structures and facilities will have to be built as part of this program.

New Construction Ideas

There were several 18th and 19th Century buildings on the shipyard site.

Historic records revealed the presence of:

  • A three story hotel
  • A small shed like storefront
  • Several stables used for the draft animals that pulled barges along the nearby river canal.

Replicas of these buildings will be erected.

  • The hotel will serve as the shipyard office.
  • The shed will be used as an information center and gift shop.
  • The stable replicas will serve as:
    • equipment workshops
    • sail loft
    • lofting facility for the shipwrights.

Shipyard Construction Costs

Building a shipyard like this which will serve as an information center and tourist attraction adds considerable costs to this program.

It also imposes environmental regulations related to the site since it is near wetlands and lies within the Susquehanna River flood plain.

Donations

The anticipated costs of the shipyard construction have raised the challenge of fundraising.

Please consider making a donation at this time and also in the future. PayPal, Credit Cards, Checks and Cash all work to help fund this program.
