SHIP DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION

In 2006, the Island Government of St. Eustatius contracted ship builder Allen C. Rawl, Incorporated-Historic Maritime Re-creations www.shipsofwood.com to complete a conceptual design of Andrew Doria.  Drawing on his extensive knowledge of ships and their rigs of this period,  historic documentation and writings, Allen produced several drawings from which a color image (See: Ship drawing) and a 1:48 scale, rigged model have been completed (See: Ship Model).

The intent is to build a new vessel---a representation of the original vessel---as historically accurate as possible based on available data.  Research for new information continues including findings from the proposed archaeological exploration.

Construction will include traditional methods incorporated with modern materials and techniques, providing jobs for a variety of craftsmen to be recruited locally and across the country.

Andrew Doria will be operated as a United States Coast Guard inspected vessel, which will necessarily require us to deviate from historic authenticity to meet modern safety standards, which is our first priority.  She will be sea-worthy, capable of operating in domestic and foreign waters, serving as an educational ship and a traveling ambassador.

Construction will include traditional methods incorporated with modern materials and  techniques.  Craftsmen will be recruited from afar and locally.
