Search for the First USS Andrew Doria

The original Andrew Doria completed its brief career as a warship when it was scuttled and burned on short notice in the Delaware River as the British Navy was moving to capture the City of Philadelphia. This occurred on November 21, 1777. The location is shown on the map shown below.

Sparse records indicate the remains of the ship are in the mouth of Big Timber Creek, Red Bank, New Jersey

ADTFS wishes to locate the underwater grave of the vessel. Discovery of the ship's remains would provide two valuable resources.

  1. Historians and Archaeologists are interested in the site to define the vessel and verify the written versions of what happened during that desperate attempt to defend Philadelphia from the invasion.
  2. Design for the new Andrew Doria is based on how brigantines of the 18th Century were built. But finding part of the hull will allow better estimates of the actual ship size and configuration.
